The military are known for their nocturnal activities and night life. Due to the multiple operation carried out in the night, it is often popular to see soldiers using night vision devices to optimize their sight in the dark. A night vision device (NVD), or night vision goggles (NVG), is a device that uses optoelectronic technology to boost the visibility of images in darkness. It produces images in varying levels of light. These images might either be in near-infrared or visible light and they are often projected in monochrome or shades of green.

The use of the NVG is not limited to the military. Civilians can purchase NVGs for their personal use. The NVG unit is made up of an image amplifier tube, a water-resistant casing, and a mounting system for using it on the helmet.
First introduced at the World War II, the technology of the night vision devices has grown past when it was first used into a more sophisticated and light weight device. The best way to make use of your night vision device is to mount it on your tactical helmet using a mounting system. This way, you do not need to use your hands or keep the device at hand for consistent use. ATE ballistic helmets and ATE tactical bump helmets are often used for mounting the night vision goggles.

Some NVG units are built with a shroud component that allows the device to be connected to the helmet themselves. Others might make use of the head-mount option. This is for use without the helmet. However, it is recommended that you use a helmet with these bumps in order to enjoy more comfort and safety.
Night vision devices can also be used in an immobile setting; for scouting or for monitoring movements. This way, it can be set up on a tripod or used in a hand-held fashion.
