When using ballistic helmets, it is important that they are properly worn to allow it a comfortable sitting on the wearer. Ballistic helmet chinstraps and retention systems are used to hold the helmet firm on the head and keep it from falling off. It is also important for keeping the helmet steady when several accessories are mounted on it. Chinstraps allows for easy control and steady sitting of the helmets while in motion and in action.
Chin straps are made for the purpose of helmet stability. Hence, they are not known for any form of ballistic protection. However, chin straps can be made from high-quality ballistic materials such as Kevlar. They can also be made from nylon and polyester. However, they are not made to offer heightened ballistic protection.
Ballistic helmets chin straps are fastened using buckles. These buckles can vary from model to model. Most helmets chin straps use the side squeeze which usually have about 2 to 3 prong buckles. They are a great option for most load applications. However, they might be a little bit difficult to buckle with a glove on hand. Smaller buckles are even much harder to handle than the mid-sized ones. This is because these forms of buckles often require both hands before they can be fastened.
Fortunately, many ballistic helmet strap manufacturers are beginning to create modern chin straps with magnetic buckles that can be easily fastened without much stress. This would come in handy when wearer is unable to use both hands, or has one hand gloved and the other free.
Apart from this, there are a number of other chin strap varieties that are best suited for different types of helmet. Some of them include the H-Harness Strap, the H-Nape Strap, the X-Nape Strap, the Dial Type systems, and many other. However, each strap has its own peculiar advantages and disadvantages. Before making a choice, ensure that the strap system being selected specifically suits all your needs and your preference.
